Gr. 5A excited at using iBoard

My Gr. 5 students love our new iBoard/SmartBoard. Reinforced Multiplication concepts in a fun way- via interactive internet math games displayed on iboard. Many reluctant mathematicians eagerly participated; realizing that MATH IS FUN!!! Next week we'll start using our new mobile laptops- 18 per Grade- Grades 3, 4, 5. VERY EXCITING!!!
This will really enhance learning. No more trips to Computer Lab- the Computer lab has come to us1 we have a brand-new Media Center at ISB- with 12 computer ready for eager researchers etc

My Reflection

WOW what a whirlwind ride and a true learning experience our 23 Things Course was! I’m so glad that I joined as I’m truly a life-long learning who never ceases to learn. Participating in the 23 Things course definitely opened up a whole new world of possibilities to me, and helped me think outside the box. I believe that completing this course has helped me become a more efficient 21st educator and learner. I thoroughly enjoyed not only learning about the variety of tools and ways of collaboration and networking that are currently available, but also creating an incredible PLN which will help my professional growth. (With twitter, I’m not only connected to over 150 people, but am keeping abreast of the latest news, trends and developments.)
More importantly I’m now a 2.0 Educator, as I’m applying what I’ve learned; for e.g. I’m collaborating using Google Docs and G Talk. I’m also using and sharing Google calendars, and iTunes, not only for listening to music but to a variety of university and other educational Podcasts, for e.g on UPCC. My students can now also make their own podcasts. Our children are the UCPP generation they have become our educators; they educate us in true Life-Long Learning!

During our course we covered the following Blogging (I LOVE having my own Blog; I started my own Blog journey after watching an inspiring video by Will Richardson. If used correctly, Blogs can be very powerful in education and the classroom; as they can extend conversations from within the classroom to a wider audience. Blogs and avatars- such as Voki- are particularly useful in situations where students are unable to come to school, but where instruction needs to continue.) Tagging (I have not only made Delicious tags for each curricula area and my own interests, but for colleagues and friends as well.)
By using these tools and the philosophy of collaboration and sharing, I’m now able to draw knowledge, support, and resources from my ever-expanding PLN. As a Classroom Teacher, I can find and collaborate with others who are passionate about learning and teaching, and who also want to share their experiences.

Even though our 23 Thing course has come to an end; I know that I will continue learning and applying what I’ve learned. I will also continue collaborating, not only with my group members, but others. I also plan to invite others to join this very worthwhile learning adventure. I’m proud to be called a 2.0 Educator!

New 23 Things Member

I believe I’ve inspired Nadia, our KA Teacher, to be a future 23 Member. Despite being super busy, coming to a new school, being the HS Principal’s wife and Mom to 3 small kiddies, Nadia realizes that completing the 23 Things Course will help her become a more efficient 21st Educator and learner and will help her collaborate with people in multiple ways; as the ultimate goal of our 23 Things course is to create our own PLN or Personal Learning Network, which makes us better Educators.

On Earth Day, which is next Wednesday April 22nd 2009, I'm planting a tree, walking, eating mostly fruits and veggies, keeping any unused house lights turned off, de-cluttering and recycling all that I possibly can. In the words of Mark Federman those much younger than I, i.e. less than 25, truly live in a world of UCPP; Ubiquitous Connectivity Persuasive Proximity .When I consider the chasm between my own parents and myself, not to mention with my 10-11 year old students and even my own two children the gap is V-A-S-T. I’m caught half-way between my parents’ generation of virtually no technology to my children’s generation who are 100% tech-savvy! With i-phones, i-pods, amazon.com, e-bay, and online-banking, long queues, in fact any queues at all, when shopping/buying, paying bills, banking, booking travel etc are a thing of the past. I remember my young 3 year old son asking my Dad ‘Grandpa, what was your favorite video when you were young’ and my Dad replying “We didn’t even have color TV -only black and white then- let alone videos. Now, and for years, my kids don’t even watch videos, with youtube, DVD’S etc! This video-clip has really made me think and it’s true that with the deft touch of a pad, click of a mouse or button, the world is at our doorstep. Time and space pose no problems, everyone is instantly and continuously connected, and every corner of the world truly is at our - and especially our young ones’ – fingertips, for them it always has been! For e.g. snail mail is something they never have to contend with, unless they so choose, a Thank You for the gift which Grandma appreciates receiving. When my children travel they pack their world and take it with them via i-phone, i-pod or camera-attached wireless laptop. Or they can simply take a virtual tour to anyplace in the world. Coming here I experienced party lines- which I had never even heard of in Sydney, Australia-as well as many frustrations waiting for painfully S-L-O-W dial-up connections, while my kids on the other hand have instant wireless internet, and using SKYPE and text messages, they happily chat to friends and family all around the globe. With Blogs, Face-book, Twitter, Google Talk, they are instantly and constantly connected. They have never experienced cameras with film- waiting for anything, it’s all there here and now; with all the tech tools available now- even one small i-phone in their hand- they have all the technology they need to learn, and stay totally and continuously connected in the 21st century. If they want to find an answer to a question, it takes them only an instant to find it, not the long treks to libraries to find suitable resources, as in the past.
I wholeheartedly agree with Mark Federman’s contention that, as a result of the vast changes the internet/technology has brought to the way students communicate and interact, educational institutions, if they are to remain relevant in the 21st century, must move from being education models that are skills-based to models of education that are much more focused on connectivity. We need to reform as our educational institutions are out of touch with student needs, currently there exists a wide gulf between what schools offer and students’ experiences in the real world. The role of educational institutions and educators must change; we need to implement the 4 C’s- to keep up with these vast changes. Our children are the UCPP generation – like fish in water- they have become our educators, we MUST change. In our high tech, mass-media, ever-changing world we too need to implement and apply the 4 ‘C’s: Connections, Context, Complexity, and Connotations, which matter so much.-and not CONTENT like the 3R’s of yesterday! Our child educator educates us in true Life-Long Learning!

RECAN Recycling Center

22 tons of compressed cans get shipped to Great Britain, for recycling, 2x monthly from RECAN in Serbia. SADLY, this is only 5% of the total cans manufactured and sold here. What happens to the other 95% you may well ask? Unfortunately, recycling is still very new to Serbia, RECAN itself only began 4 years ago. With a greater awareness of the importance of recycling, hopefully this % will triple if not quadruple in the next few years.
